INTERNATIONAL CUSTOMS DAY CELEBRATIONS
has called on Partner States to adopt cutting-edge technologies, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), to modernize customs procedures and curb illicit trade across the region.
Speaking during International Customs Day at the EAC Headquarters, Hon. Nduva emphasized simplifying customs processes and enhancing public awareness to ensure grassroots participation in regional integration efforts. She highlighted the pivotal role of customs officers in facilitating trade, ensuring security, and protecting revenue, noting the Customs Union’s success in boosting intra-EAC trade and reducing barriers.
The SG lauded innovations such as the regional electronic cargo tracking systems (RECTS), the Single Customs Territory (SCT), and the Simplified Trade Regime (STR), which have streamlined processes, reduced smuggling, and increased efficiency. She also noted the growth in EAC trade volumes, with total trade rising to USD 80.6 billion in 2023, reflecting the region’s improving trade systems.
Representatives from the private sector, including Mr. Charles Rubaale Mwebembezi, pledged ongoing support for simplifying customs procedures and promoting collaboration.
